Writing Cases
Writing cases are portable cases designed to contain the instruments and materials required for writing. These cases allowed writing tools, paper and correspondence materials to be organised within a single case.
During the nineteenth century portable writing equipment was commonly carried during travel, and writing cases formed part of the wider tradition of fitted cases used for personal activities.
The Purpose of Writing Cases
Writing cases were designed to store and organise the tools required for writing and correspondence. The interior of the case was arranged so that writing instruments, paper and related materials could be kept securely together.
This arrangement allowed the owner to carry a portable writing set when travelling or when writing away from a desk.
Fitted Interiors
The interiors of writing cases were often fitted with compartments designed to hold writing instruments and materials in place. Compartments were typically lined with leather, velvet or silk to protect the objects contained within the case.
This fitted arrangement followed the same principles used in other fitted cases such as dressing cases and jewellery cases.
Writing and Travel
Correspondence formed an important part of daily life during the nineteenth century. Travellers often required portable writing equipment in order to write letters and documents while away from home.
Writing cases therefore became part of the broader culture of travel and personal equipment.
The Craft of Case Making
Writing cases were produced using the same techniques applied to other fitted cases. The case provided the structural framework while the interior compartments organised the objects contained within it.
This approach reflects the craft tradition of case making associated with fitted dressing cases and other portable cases.
The Leuchars Tradition
The Leuchars firm became associated with fitted cases designed for personal activities such as grooming, travel and writing. Writing cases formed part of the wider tradition of fitted cases produced within the London luxury trades.
Leuchars London ® continues the traditions associated with the historic craft of case making.
