Cases, fitted objects, travel goods and objects of presentation may combine leather, wood, metal, glass, textiles and other materials. Their care should be determined by the materials, construction, age and condition of each object.

General Care

Handle objects with clean, dry hands and support them securely when moving or opening them. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, excessive heat, damp conditions and abrupt changes in temperature or humidity.

Do not force locks, hinges, clasps, drawers or fitted components. Retain loose fittings, labels and associated pieces with the object. For routine dusting, use only a clean, soft and dry cloth or a suitable soft brush.

Avoid proprietary cleaners, polishes, oils, solvents and adhesives unless their suitability for the particular materials has been established. A treatment appropriate for one component may damage another.

Historic Objects

Historical Leuchars pieces and related objects should be assessed individually. Patina, wear, earlier repairs and alterations can form part of an object’s history. Any intervention should be proportionate, carefully considered and documented.
