The case and its contents

The auction catalogue dates the ensemble to about 1880 and identifies a Leuchars & Son London/Paris mark on the case, with Leuchars also named on some implements. It describes six writing and cutting accessories in gilt metal and partly silver-gilt, together with the Emperor’s applied personal arms on the lid.

The photographs show a fitted interior lined in vivid silk. The arrangement gives each implement its own place: the case is an organised working interior as well as a container.

The provenance record

The imperial ownership and descent are Dorotheum’s catalogue attribution. They provide a distinct object history; they do not establish an Austrian royal warrant for Leuchars.
